Continuing Progress for Animals in Labs

February 1, 2016 • Posted in News Articles

After all of our 2015 achievements, we want to thank you again for your generous support. Because of supporters like you we have seen another year of milestones on the road to ending the suffering and deaths of animals in outdated, inhumane and ‘status quo’ science.

2015 highlights include:

  • APRIL: NEAVS presented at and I was interviewed by the Cosmetics Compliance Summit – an outreach to the industry.
  • MAY: NEAVS and its coalition launched a campaign to stop the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service from granting Yerkes National Primate Research Center (Yerkes) a permit to export Lucas, Fritz, Agatha, Abby, Tara, Faye, Elvira, and Georgia, to an unaccredited overseas zoo.
  • JUNE: The USDA received well over 10,000 public comments on NEAVS’ Primate Psychological Well-Being Rulemaking Petition.
  • JUNE: FWS announced captive chimpanzees would be up-listed from threatened to endangered.
  • JULY: The Humane Cosmetics Act (HCA-H.R. 2858) was reintroduced with bi-partisan support.
  • AUGUST: NEAVS dedicated our Summer UPDATE to some outstanding women in our movement!
  • OCTOBER: FWS 30-day comment period for Yerkes’ export permit received over 25,000+ comments in opposition!
  • NOVEMBER: The National Institutes of Health announced it will retire ALL federally-owned chimpanzees and NO LONGER HOLD 50 in ‘reserve’ for possible future research.
  • DECEMBER: In response to a lawsuit filed by NEAVS and its coalition, FWS retracted its decision to approve Yerkes’ permit, and would re-open another comment period!

We all know that however much we accomplished, there is much more to do.  NEAVS looks to 2016 to continue the progress we have made for animals in labs, to major new victories, and to facing the challenges of all that is left to be done.

For the animals,

Theodora Capaldo, EdD
