sanc·tu·ary Middle English sanctuarie, from Middle French sainctuarie, from Late Latin sanctuarium, from Latin sanctus meaning holy or sacred 1: a consecrated place: 2: a place of refuge and protection
At the finest sanctuaries, caregivers look at the world from the chimpanzees’ perspective. Design details and daily life are so much more than keeping everyone clean or fed or healthy. Everything done for chimpanzees in model sanctuaries is done to cut through the harsh boredom of captivity.
Many chimpanzees who have been rescued and are now home in sanctuaries like Fauna Foundation, Save the Chimps, Center for Great Apes, and others. Life now offers something new, something alive, something that makes life seem not just bearable, but worth living.
