The Wildlife WayStation, founded in 1976 and located on 160 acres north of the San Fernando Valley in California, was home to roughly 400 animals, including around 42 chimpanzees—some retired from the Laboratory for Experimental Medicine and Surgery in Primates (LEMSIP). Chimpanzees were housed in indoor and outdoor enclosures in small social groups. In 2019 the facility closed and the chimpanzees were relocated to other sanctuaries and zoos.
